Sunningdale Agreement
(1973)
   The agreement reached by the Heath Conservative Government to establish a power-sharing executive in Northern Ireland possessing many domestic functions in which Unionist and Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) representatives worked together. The agreement on power-sharing split the Unionist party, more hard-line loyalists preferring a return to old-style Stormont politics in which Unionism was a dominant force.
   The executive, led by Brian Faulkner, survived for four months, before being brought down in 1974 by a workers general strike which brought the province to a standstill.
